The Ashland Post 1067 is once again participating in the Voice of Democracy and Patriot's Pen Scholarship Essay Contest.  The VFW is dedicated to promoting and investing in our future generation.  If you are a democracy-loving high school student or a patriotic middle school student you may be interested in winning these scholarships and awards.  Any student enrolled in a public, private, parochial school or home study program is eligible.

Voice of Democracy is a 3-5 minute audio essay competition open to all high school students in grade 9-12.  The 2017 theme is "American History: Our Hope for the Future."  Over $2 million are awarded in educational scholarships and incentives, including an all expense paid trip to Washington D.C.  The national first place winner receives a $30,000 scholarship; other scholarships awarded range from $1000 to $16,000.

Patriot's Pen is a writing competition open to all students in sixth through eighth grade.  The 2017 theme is "America's Gift to My Generation."  This essay contest encourages young minds to examine America's history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300-400 word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief.  The national first-place winner wins $5000 and an all expense paid trip to Washington D.C.  The first-place winner from each state competes for national awards totaling $54,500, with each first-place state winner receiving a minimum of $500 at the national level.
